Hans, who is about to retire as school principal, is more like a guest in his wife Rita's life. Their grown son has long moved out, and their long marriage follows a well-rehearsed routine, with Rita setting the pace. And as far as she is concerned, there is no reason to change anything about it. In fact: she doesn't like changes. The new tiles in the bathroom are just the beginning of something that greatly worries Rita. Suddenly, old wounds become visible again. Suddenly, both of them realize how little they know about their son's life. Suddenly, there is this emptiness in their lives.
