Kaimt Cultural Cinema—“No Lipizzaner horses yet”

Documentation - Max Ophüls Film Prize

Olga Kosanović has lived in Vienna since her birth in 1995 – yet her application for Austrian citizenship is denied. Why? She has spent a total of 58 days too long abroad during her lifetime. This personal experience is the starting point for a clever, humorous, and multi-layered cinematic engagement with the themes of belonging, nation, and identity. With a playful approach, “Still No Lipizzaner” combines documentary, performance, interviews, and archival material. The director questions the rituals surrounding citizenship and shows how absurd and arbitrary the rules can often be. She also targets national myths – such as the symbol of the Lipizzaners, which are now bred outside of Austria but stand for Austrian identity like few other things. Through conversations with legal experts, philosophers, and artists, including Toxische Pommes, Judith Kohlenberger, and Robert Menasse, Kosanović scrutinizes with a sharp eye who is allowed to belong – and why. Her film is a clever, very personal, and at the same time universal plea for a more open understanding of belonging.
