The Petersberg with its late Romanesque fortifications, St. Peter's Chapel and the last mountain cemetery used on the Moselle is one of the most idyllic places in the Moselle valley.
Towards the end of the 3rd century, the Romans (likely initiated by the first emperor residing in Trier, Constantius I.) built a fortification on the Petersberg. It was part of a military concept that provided for a whole chain of such outposts on the mountains in the Moselle valley. Several rock-hewn chambers, a low stone wall as a remnant of the former enclosing wall, and remains of a section trench are still preserved. Small finds and coins evidence that the outpost existed until the fall of Roman rule in the second half of the 5th century.
