The "Burghaus" of a former "Wasserburg" was first mentioned in a document in 1246.
In 1325, on the occasion of a feudal appointment to Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg (1307-1354), it was described as a structure surrounded by a moat. The castle house was the residence of famous noble families from the 15th to 17th century and the birthplace of Archbishop Johann III of Metzenhausen (1492-1540) and the cathedral canon and Trier deputy Hugo Emmerich von Eltz (1643-1698).
During the Thirty Years' War, it suffered significant damage, particularly from the Swedes and Spaniards. After destruction, it was repeatedly rebuilt and has thus lost its original form. However, the large wine cellar still testifies to the original impressive building, which once had three watchtowers and was surrounded by a moat. Various counts and noble families exercised both minor and major jurisdiction from here and were responsible for the table of the Palatine count's court in Heidelberg Castle. So, there was certainly no shortage of Neefer wine there. Today, the castle house is privately owned.
