Burghaus Neef

The "Burghaus" of a former "moat castle" was first documented in 1246.

1325, on the occasion of a fief assignment to Elector Balduin of Luxembourg (1307-1354), it was described as a complex surrounded by a moat. The castle house was the residence of famous noble families from the 15th to the 17th century and the birthplace of Archbishop Johann III of Metzenhausen (1492-1540) and the canon and Trier stadtholder Hugo Emmerich von Eltz (1643-1698).

After devastation during the Thirty Years' War, it suffered significant damage particularly from the Swedes and Spaniards. After its destructions, it was rebuilt time and again, thereby losing its original form. However, the large wine cellar still bears witness to the original impressive building, which once had three watchtowers and was surrounded by a moat. Various counts and noble families exercised both lower and higher court powers from here and were responsible for the table of the Palatine count's court in Heidelberg Castle. Thus, there was likely no shortage of Neefer wine there. Today, the castle house is privately owned.
