Abbey ruin "Kloster Stuben" The Abbey ruin of the former Augustinian abbey of Stuben, founded 1137, today also use as an events venue.
Archbishop Alberto granted the monastery the patronage of the church in Neef in 1140, thus the Christian community of Neef was under the protection of the convent and had to pay tithes (formerly: tax payment) to it.
The noble monastery of Stuben has been struggling since the 14th century with constant violations of the vow of personal poverty. For this reason, the monastery was converted into a free women's foundation in 1788 by Clemens Wenzeslaus after repeated but unsuccessful reform attempts and was finally dissolved in 1789.
For almost 600 years, from 1208 to 1789, the Staurothek (a display case designed by the Byzantine emperors) containing famous relics, including a wood particle from the holy cross of Christ, as well as the victory cross of the emperors of Byzantium (Constantinople), one of the most precious works of art in the world, was kept in Stuben. Today, this valuable treasure is located in the Diocesan Museum Limburg.
