The Geierlay loop is a 6.4 km long premium circular hiking trail that includes a crossing of the most beautiful suspension rope bridge in Germany, the Geierlay.
The highlight of the tour is the most beautiful suspension rope bridge in Germany, the Geierlay.
We walk from the Geierlay visitor center along Kastellauner-Straße, first through the small, tranquil village of Mörsdorf with its 600 inhabitants. In the center of the village, we turn left into Pohlstraße and follow it to the street "Auf der Lex". Here we turn right and walk towards the valley. At the sewage treatment plant, we change from the paved path to the narrow forest path, which first leads us slightly uphill and through a small wood towards Mörsdorfer Brückenkopf.
Once we reach the bridgehead, we get a first impression of the unique bridge structure. The Geierlay suspension rope bridge was opened in October 2015 after a construction period of just 6 months and connects the communities of Mörsdorf and Sosberg. The bridge is 360m long and swings over the Mörsdorf stream valley at a height of 100m. Now that we have admired the structure up close, we pluck up all our courage and head onto the bridge.
At the bridgehead, it is still quite wide at 1.40 m, but this changes the closer we get to the middle of the bridge, where it is only 85 cm. Accepting the slight swaying of the bridge, we hike slightly uphill again from the middle of the bridge to the Sosberg bridgehead, where we take another look back, happy that we have made the crossing. Leaving the Geierlay behind us, we turn left and follow the forest path, which slowly winds along the slope, with only one small uphill section, into the Mörsdorf stream valley.
Once in the valley, we meet the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium long-distance hiking trail, which runs along the same path as the Geierlay loop down here in the valley. Enjoying the tranquillity and idyll of the valley, we hike along the Mörsdorf stream, which babbles gently beside us. While the path from the bridgehead into the valley was still a wide forest path, it has the character of a climb down here in the stream valley. Near the 5-way square, it's worth taking a look up, because if you look closely, you'll see that we're right under the bridge. Whereas before we had a great view of the stream valley from the bridge, we can now see the Geierlay visitors walking across the bridge. After a short rest, we tackle the last section of the Geierlay loop. The ascent is steep and strenuous, but as we hike out of the forest back towards the center of the village, the conclusion is that the tour was worth it.
