This route goes around the Riveris reservoir, the drinking water supply for the city of Trier and the Ruwer collective municipality. The beautiful views along the water make this route special.
The drinking water reservoir, built in the valley of the Riveris, has been supplying the city of Trier with water from the Hochwald since 1958. Impressive is the 50 m high dam, the maximum reservoir capacity is 5 million m³.
The 7.9 km long circular route is very popular with hikers, cyclists, and joggers. On well-maintained paths you can enjoy beautiful views over the reservoir on the forested slopes of the Hochwald. The information boards by Stadtwerke Trier provide interesting facts about the reservoir and topics related to water supply in the region.
The path from the parking lot passes by the water treading basin and a small barefoot path. The place invites you to linger and it is even possible to cool your feet in the Riveris here.
No matter which direction you want to walk around the lake, it always starts uphill! But the effort is worth it, because after a short, quite steep climb you reach the impressive dam and then understand why there is this slope.
If you decide to start on the eastern side, the ascent takes place on the paved section up to the dam. From there, the path continues without major climbs along the reservoir to the mouth area of the Thielenbach. The route continues along the larger arm of the reservoir to the mouth area of the Riveris and then back towards the dam. Shortly before you have circled the reservoir, you should rest on the beautiful, large bench at the lake view and direct your gaze to the confluence of the two arms.
Basically, entering the forest and walking the hiking trails is at your own risk.
Seasonal and weather conditions require increased surefootedness on certain sections of the paths. Therefore, wear clothing and hiking boots with suitable soles adapted to the season and weather.
You are in the drinking water protection area of the Riveris reservoir. Please observe the relevant instructions.
Sturdy footwear, sufficient provisions.
Pause at the large bench at the lake view shortly before reaching the dam again and enjoy the panoramic view! Plan your rest here!
From Riveris, go through the town towards the Riveris reservoir until you reach the parking lot below the dam on the right side.
Parking in the parking lot is free of charge.
