Square Tower

The "Viereckige Turm" (square tower) is part of the old town fortifications and served as protection against troops from the Zeller Bachtal.

In the early modern period, it served as the prison and was referred to as "Wofsturm" or "gray thorn (tower)" in 1626. Old city views from 1576 and 1646 still show corner towers and a steep roof. With its six stories and ground floor, it has a height of 22 meters. Inside the tower, you can see two massive oak beams with an old door lintel and four large window openings. The current arches were only created in the 19th century as access to the cemetery.
