Cultural cinema Kaimt-"The Mucker"

With the Brazilian feature film "Die Mucker", we present a rarity from the treasure trove of film history. The story dives into an impending catastrophe. It follows the final phase of life of a group of poor farmers, both men and women, who emigrated to the south of Brazil and rallied around the devout Josefina Mentz Maurer in the early 1870s, seeing her, a woman, as their Messiah. This group of "Mucker" implements a model of collective agriculture based on the Bible and socialist ideas. This initially invites mistrust, but soon leads to deadly hatred from settlers who cling to a village life oriented around private property and personal wealth. The conflict escalates.

Before the screening, Gaby Küppers and Gert Eisenbürger will briefly provide context on the emigration from German regions to Brazil in the 19th century.

After the film, they will present their book "MoselbrasilianerInnen. Migration: Weggehen, Ankommen, Gestalten", published in May 2026. It describes the misery in the Moselle region that drove people - men and women - to undertake the difficult journey to Brazil. The reasons for their warm reception in Brazil, what they omitted in their letters home, and what became of the subsequent generations are also topics of discussion. One thing can be revealed: Some people from the Moselle region became very important for the history of Brazil.
