A random event that seemingly starts harmlessly ignites a chain of dramatic and unpredictable consequences: After a car accident in which a dog is hit and killed, the driver Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi) and expectant father seeks repair from the vengeful Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri). Vahid, who was once tortured in prison, believes he recognizes his tormentor in Eghbal. The unfortunate chain of events begins when Vahid initially attempts to abduct Eghbal and bury him alive. As doubts about the true identity arise, he seeks confirmation of his suspicion from former inmates. However, they have entirely different plans, and the moral lines continue to blur.

At the Cannes Film Festival, where Mohammad Rasoulof's "The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree" was screened last year, Jafar Panahi's new work "A Simple Accident" won the Palme d'Or this year, marking his most direct cinematic reckoning with the regime to date. After years of professional ban and a prison sentence, from which he was freed after nearly seven months in custody following a hunger strike in early February 2023, Panahi was able to present his film personally.
