Calming Hunsrück forests and beautiful stream valleys, that is what we experience on the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig between Blankenrath, Mittelstrimmig, Altstrimmig, and Mörsdorf.

The first part of the stage runs through a hilly and quiet forest landscape, where we cross two idyllic stream valleys. Then the path runs over an agriculturally used ridge, which offers magnificent views of the Eifel and Hunsrück.
After crossing the L 202, the path runs parallel to the dream loop "Layensteig Strimmiger Berg." Past the villages of Mittelstrimmig and Altstrimmig, it descends into the beautiful stream valley of the Bildbach to the Mörsdorf stream.
There, the path runs through a deeply cut, quiet valley mostly along the Mörsdorf stream. Via a side path, it goes 1.5 km uphill to the stage destination Mörsdorf.
Parallel to the side path runs the "Geierlay loop." This circular trail leads on about 6 km from Mörsdorf via the Geierlay Suspension Bridge and back through the valley to Mörsdorf.

General information

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a nature-oriented path that consists of 65% soft forest ground, grassy paths, or runs along streams. This special quality can, however, lead to problems after longer periods of rain and make parts of the path difficult to walk. Therefore, sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Tip

Roman excavations near Mittelstrimmig
At Mittelstrimmig, remains of a Roman settlement (Vicus) were found during excavations. It was located on an important Celtic-Roman trade route.

“Shock Chapel” near Mittelstrimmig
It stands on the path to the medieval execution site of the Counts of Winneberg-Beilstein. Those condemned to death in the Middle Ages were led past the chapel to the gallows.

The parish church of Mittelstrimmig, a three-aisled, five-bay hall church, was built during the years 1766 – 1769.

Geierlay Suspension Bridge
Germany's most beautiful suspension bridge is connected by a side path to the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. 360 meters long and 100 meters high above the Mörsdorf stream valley between the communities of Sosberg and Mörsdorf, the bridge is an attraction for those without fear of heights and adventurers. Modeled after Nepalese suspension bridges, it swings from one bridgehead to the other. It was named in an open public competition. Geierslay is the name of an old parcel of land over which the bridge also leads.
