Narrow paths over slate, great views, and stream valleys are the highlights of this stage of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig.

The stage begins spectacularly with the passage through the "Altlayer Schweiz" into the Hitzelbach valley and the Altlayer stream valley. The path leads mostly on narrow trails and over bizarre slate rock formations with great views into the Hitzelbach valley and then continues into the Altlayer stream valley.
On the ascent towards Peterswald, we pass a pilgrimage chapel. Before and after crossing the K 51 road, there are great panoramic views, before the path leads into the wild-romantic Peterswald stream valley. In the lonely stream valleys, there are also bizarre slate rock formations.
The path then continuously climbs up to Schauren. We cross the B 421 and follow the path through an agriculturally shaped, scenic landscape to Blankenrath.

General information

Safety Guidelines

Surefootedness and good physical condition are essential prerequisites for hiking this premium long-distance trail.

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a natural path that runs 65% over soft forest ground, grassy paths, or along stream courses. However, this special quality can lead to problems after longer periods of rain, making parts of the path difficult to walk. Therefore, sturdy footwear is strongly recommended.

Tip

Altlayer Schweiz
with a combination of diverse rock formations, rustic forests, spectacular views, and narrow paths on the
descent to the wild-romantic Hitzelbach.

Pilgrimage Chapel Peterswald
It is located in the middle of a forest and is the destination of prayer processions on May 1 and Ascension Day. Inside there is a
baroque Marian altar. In front of the chapel stands a wooden pulpit.

Blankenrath
The stage village Blankenrath has its origins in the 9th and 10th centuries. In the center, there are some half-timbered houses and the
parish church built in 1761 with a Romanesque tower of the predecessor church.
