Narrow paths over slate, great views and stream valleys are the highlights of this stage of the Saar-Hunsrück Climb.

The stage begins spectacularly with the passage through "Altlayer Switzerland" into the Hitzelbachtal and Altlayer Bachtal valleys. The route leads mostly along narrow paths and over bizarre slate rock formations with great views into the Hitzelbach valley and then into the Altlayer Bachtal valley.
On the ascent towards Peterswald we pass a pilgrimage chapel. Before and after crossing the K 51, there are great panoramic views before the path leads into the wild and romantic Peterswalder Bachtal valley. There are also bizarre slate rock formations in the secluded stream valleys.
The path then climbs steadily up to Schauren. We cross the B 421 and follow the path through an agricultural landscape with plenty of views to Blankenrath.

General information

Safety Guidelines

Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are essential prerequisites for tackling this premium long-distance hiking trail.

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a near-natural trail, 65% of which is over soft forest soil, grass paths or along streams. However, this special quality can also lead to problems after long periods of rain and make parts of the trail difficult to walk on. Sturdy footwear is therefore highly recommended.

Tip

Altlayer Schweiz
with its combination of diverse rock formations, rustic forests, spectacular views and narrow paths on the
descent to the wild and romantic Hitzelbach stream.

Peterswald pilgrimage chapel
It is located in the middle of a forest and is the destination of the May Day and Ascension Day processions. Inside there is a baroque altar to the Virgin Mary
. There is a wooden pulpit in front of the chapel.

Blankenrath
The stage town of Blankenrath has its origins in the 9th and 10th centuries. In the center there are some half-timbered houses and the
parish church built in 1761 with a Romanesque tower from the previous church.
