Hike to the Nittel Muschelkalk rocks - a lighthouse of biodiversity.

After starting in the town center, walk uphill towards the vineyards, which you cross directly beneath the impressive and mighty rock face. Afterwards, continue to the stone sculpture "Large Pointer". The sculpture was created in 2001 by sculptor Jürgen Waxweiler as part of the sculpture symposium "Stones on the River". After a photo pause with fantastic motifs of the town, Moselle course, and vineyards, the narrow path leads us with magnificent views directly over the rock edge. Passing an orchid area, the path continues to the end of the rocks, then returns through the vineyards back into the town. The hike is moderately demanding.

General information

Directions

The hiking trail N3 starts at the village square and initially follows the street "In der Gessel". Then it turns right onto "Kirchenweg" and shortly afterwards left again onto the small street "Im Kalköff". At the intersection with the street "Im Blümchen" it goes left into the vineyards of the Nittel site "Im Leiterchen". After a short distance, the N3 branches off diagonally to the right towards the stone sculpture "Knee with Joint".

From here, the path goes moderately uphill for a while and then continues without further inclines below the rock face of the Nittel rock with the first views over the Nittel and Machtum Moselle loops.

After about 15 to 20 minutes, the path runs steeply downhill along a vineyard to rejoin the N1 again at the bottom on the paved service road. Past the rock garden "Zum Lehlinger" it goes steeply uphill, then right, and past the next stone sculpture "Large Pointer" on a narrow meadow path up to the rock ridge.

After a short time, the path turns right into the forest and then runs together with the Moselsteig with some small ascents and descents below the ridge. Along the way, enchanting views of Nittel and the Moselle open up again and again. Several information boards provide information about the rock, history, and important natural events.

After about 20 minutes, at a fork in the path, there is an invitation to continue gently downhill, but the N3 initially leads steeply uphill again. After the ascent, the path continues at an elevation to a viewpoint bench on a clearing with a magnificent view extending to the Nittel Rochus Chapel.

From here the path continues as a footpath to the left over a meadow to steeply turn right downwards after about 5 minutes. At the bottom on a field path, the trail turns right and continues gently downhill between vineyards.

After a few minutes, it reaches the previously uphill-used driveway and then follows along the "Knee" back to the village on the already known route.

Tip: If you still want a short break with a view and wine, you can turn right below the "Knee" and follow the N1 for a short distance. After a few hundred meters, you will reach the "Wine Hut at Leiterchen", operated by two Nittel winemakers where wine can be purchased from the well-stocked refrigerator by card payment.

Otherwise, after about 10 minutes you will reach the starting point of the hike again at the village square.

The hike is continuously marked with the "N3" sign.
