The circular hike leads through forest, meadow, and vineyard paths through the Moselle town of Mülheim. Nomen est Omen: the route is definitely scenic.
Insight into the hiking tour:
The varied panorama path of the municipality of Mülheim on the Moselle leads through the vineyards as well as extensive forest sections and offers great views: of the former county and of the Mülheim vineyard site Sonnenlay - by the way, the most consumed wine on all Zeppelin Atlantic flights. A worthwhile detour along the route is the Elisenhäuschen in the Mülheim vineyards. A legend revolves around this, whose main character is Napoleon. On his retreat after the lost Battle of Leipzig, Napoleon Bonaparte camped near Mülheim in 1813. After a night of debauchery, one of the soldiers harassed a winemaker’s wife, whose husband then killed the Frenchman. Napoleon ordered the husband to be handed over, otherwise the village would be burned down. In this situation, a Mülheim citizen offered 3000 thalers as compensation and thus saved his village. As a thank you, he received a valuable piece of land from the community, on which he planted a vineyard and named it "Luisenweinberg" in memory of the Prussian queen. The folk name quickly made it the Elisenberg.
There are no significant inclines on the circular hiking path. This also makes it very family-friendly. You can stop in Mülheim: in restaurants or wine taverns. Packed lunch is recommended for on the way.
The starting point of this route is the hiker's parking lot at the fire station in the center of Mülheim, directly at the festival square. From the fire station, a path leads you uphill to the left through the residential area; after 200 m, this path turns right into the Bergfried, which leads out of the town. Following the signage of the Panoramaweg, you reach the vineyards through an underpass of federal road 53 at the end of the residential area. On the vineyard paths of Johannisberg, you can enjoy an impressive view over the vineyards to the Moselle River. The path continues straight ahead, leading you over meadows and fields through the Andeler Forest. In the forest area above this wine village, leave the forest path at the fork, parallel to the Goldbach stream. Following the forest trail to the left, after some hiking you return to the Mülheim vineyards. To the left above these hills towers the legendary Elisenhäuschen, which is definitely worth a detour.
After a short detour to this hut, another highlight awaits in the switchbacks of the vineyard paths: From the vineyard site "Veldenzer Kirchberg", where the hiking path "Grafen, Gold und Schwarzer Peter" intersects, there is a breathtaking view over the Moselle Valley. Following the vineyard paths, you reach the lovely valley of the Veldenzer Bach stream. The town of Veldenz, together with Mülheim and Andel, historically formed the former county of Veldenz. Downstream, the path follows the course of the stream back to the starting point at the fire station. At the adjacent market or festival square, a famous folk festival takes place each year according to old tradition: the "Mülheimer Markt." In the first week of August every year, locals and guests celebrate the market, which is already 500 years old and dates back to a market and court day of the counts of Veldenz. Highlights of this festival include the big "Count's Wine Tasting", which marks the start every year. A magnificent parade, alongside the fairground and market stalls, forms another highlight.
