Nature experience from Schoden through the picturesque wine landscape and the impressive Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve.

On a canoe trip with Kanu SaarFari on the Saar, you will discover the scenic beauty of the Saar valley completely anew. The Wiltinger Saarbogen, which is under nature protection, is for many the most beautiful section of the Saar with its lively rapids. The landscape experience is unique, as you pass river gravel bars, water lily fields, reed and bulrush, and also kingfishers. A break can be taken at the Kanzem weir, and via the Saar canal, you return to the starting point.

The German Canoe Association (Bundesverband Kanu e.V.) has certified the Saar from the Serrig weir (km 18) to the mouth in Konz (km 0) as a certified canoe waterway.

General information

Directions

Canoe route without guide from Schoden - Wiltinger Saarbogen - Kanzem weir - Saar canal - Schoden.

Difficulty level: slow to medium flow speed, partly shipping channel.

The route starts behind the weir in Schoden. After loading the boats onto the canoe cart and circling the dam, follows the most beautiful section of the route through the Wiltinger Saarbogen. Between Schoden and the Kanzem lock, the Saar is almost untouched. The Wiltinger Saarbogen, which is under nature protection, adds real momentum to the canoe trip with its lively rapids. The landscape experience is unique, as you pass river gravel bars, water lily fields, reed and bulrush areas and, with some luck, can even spot kingfishers.

You can take a break at the Kanzem weir and portage the lock with the help of a canoe cart. Via the Saar canal, you return to the starting point.

Safety Guidelines

Preserve and protect nature!

- As canoeists, we love nature, want to protect and preserve it, and be a role model for others.

- To avoid trampling damage, we start and stop only at designated entry and exit points.

- We do not paddle our boat in reed belts, bulrush stands, or pond and water lily areas so as not to destroy the plants.

- To avoid disturbing water birds and other river inhabitants, we do not get too close to the animals, stay away from nesting sites and retreat areas, and behave as quietly as possible.

- We ensure that no plastic bottles or other rubbish falls into the river.

- For species protection reasons, pets are not allowed in the boat in the nature reserve.

What to observe?

- The Saar is a large shipping channel, where, as on roads, there is an absolute ban on drugs and alcohol!

- For your own safety, participants in a canoe trip should be able to swim. Children under 12 should gain their first paddling experience accompanied by adults.

- Our life jackets are very comfortable and do not hinder paddling. They provide buoyancy in case of capsizing and protect against cold and injury. Even very good swimmers wear a buoyancy aid with us.

- Large shipping traffic always has the right of way. To avoid being surprised by a large tow, canoeists always paddle at the edge on the main river.

- Forbidden and life-threatening areas, e.g. in front of weirs, are marked with a red-white-red sign. These areas must be avoided by a wide margin.
