The Geierlay loop is a 6.4 km long premium circular hiking trail that includes crossing Germany's most beautiful suspension bridge, the Geierlay.
The highlight of the route is Germany's most beautiful suspension bridge, the Geierlay.
We hike from the Geierlay visitor center along Kastellauner Straße first through the small, quaint village of Mörsdorf with 600 inhabitants. In the village center, we turn left into Pohlstraße and follow it to the street "Auf der Lex". Here we turn right and hike towards the valley. At the sewage treatment plant, we change from the paved road to the narrow forest path, which initially leads us slightly uphill and through a small forest towards the Mörsdorf bridgehead.
Arriving at the bridgehead, we get a first impression of the unique bridge structure. The Geierlay suspension bridge was opened in October 2015 after only 6 months of construction and connects the communities of Mörsdorf and Sosberg. The bridge is 360 m long and swings 100 m high over the Mörsdorf stream valley. After admiring the structure up close, we gather all our courage and step onto the bridge.
At the bridgehead, it is still quite wide at 1.40 m, but this changes as we get closer to the middle of the bridge, where it is only 85 cm. Accepting the slight swings of the bridge, we walk uphill again from the middle of the bridge to the Sosberg bridgehead, where we happily look back after having crossed. Leaving the Geierlay behind us, we turn left and follow the forest path, which winds slowly along the slope with only a small uphill section, then into the Mörsdorf stream valley.
In the valley, we meet the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium long-distance trail, which runs here in the valley below on the same path as the Geierlay loop. Enjoying the peace and idyll of the valley, we hike along the Mörsdorf stream, which gently babbles alongside us. While the path from the bridgehead to the valley was still a wide forest path, it has steep trail character here in the valley. Near the 5-ways place, it's worth looking up, because if you look closely, you notice that we are directly under the bridge. Previously, we had a great view from the bridge into the valley, and now we see Geierlay visitors walking over the bridge. After a short rest, we then tackle the last section of the Geierlay loop. The ascent is steep and strenuous, but as we hike out of the forest back towards the village center, the conclusion is that the route was worth it.
Because this route not only has the suspension bridge as a highlight but also offers pure nature!
Crossing the bridge is at your own risk. Surefootedness and a lack of fear of heights are important.
Good footwear is required. Otherwise, no special equipment is necessary.
Don't forget your camera!
Hold your phone tightly while crossing the Geierlay, as the gaps between the wooden planks are exactly phone-sized.
