Discover the Himmerod Monastery as well as the parish and pilgrimage church in Klausen on this bike route. Enjoy spiritual moments in the wonderful nature of the Eifel!
The Eifel Pilgrim Cycle Path connects two significant church buildings: the Cistercian Himmerod Monastery and the pilgrimage church in Klausen.
The start of the cycle path is at Himmerod Monastery, founded in 1134 by Bernard of Clairvaux. The baroque monastery church is particularly impressive. The quiet surroundings of the monastery create the special atmosphere of Himmerod. From Himmerod, the route initially leads to Großlittgen and on to the small Eifel villages of Minderlittgen and Hupperath. The cycle path then leads through a forest area to Bergweiler. Via Dreis, it continues steadily towards the Mosel river until reaching Klausen. From there, the Eberhards Pilgrim Cycle Path proceeds to the Siebenborn Monastery in Maring-Noviand and connects there to the Maare-Mosel Cycle Path.
The Klausen pilgrimage church "Maria Heimsuchung" was consecrated in 1502, but its history goes back much further: already in 1440, the Marian devotee Eberhard placed a figure of the "Sorrowful Mother of God" at the site of today’s pilgrimage church. Eberhard’s bones are still housed in a wooden shrine under the altar of the chapel of grace.
The route has a varied course and partly runs over gravel and natural, as well as asphalted paths and road sections.

The section between Himmerod and Großlittgen is currently still covered with coarse gravel and will be improved with an additional fine base layer by mid-August 2021.
Details of the route can also be found in the path description.
From Maring-Noviand, you can continue about 8 km along the Maare-Mosel cycle path to Bernkastel-Kues or about 9 km to Wittlich station, and from there take the Radbus Line 300 back to Großlittgen.
From Großlittgen to Himmerod Abbey is then only a few kilometers away.
