From the ruins of the Roman imperial villa in Konz, cycle to Tawern to the Roman temple complex, then continue over the Saargau to the wine village of Nittel. On the Moselle Cycle Path, return to Konz.
The circular route starts at the ruins of the Roman imperial palace in the Saar-Moselle town of Konz. You cross the Saar over the Saar bridge. In Roman times, an important long-distance road ran here from the Mediterranean via Metz to Trier. You then cycle along part of the Way of St. James and arrive in the municipality of Tawern. The settlement arose as a rest stop on the Roman road. An authentic model of the Roman street settlement (Vicus Tabernae) is set up in a pavilion. Up the Metzenberg, you reach the Roman temple complex. Over the heights of the Saargau with fantastic views over the Moselle valley to Luxembourg, you cycle further towards the Moselle. Through the wine street of the wine village of Nittel, with renowned wineries and excellent dining options, you arrive at the Moselle Cycle Path. The Upper Moselle is the largest cultivation area for Elbling wine in Europe. Along the wine villages Temmels, Oberbillig, Wasserliesch, you come to the confluence of the Saar and Moselle and back to Konz.
The bike route begins at the Konz Tourist Information. Turn right into Brückenstraße and cycle immediately left across the parking lot towards the market square. At the market square, you will see the "Konstantin Foot," which advertised the Konstantin exhibition in Trier in 2007. The foot is an authentic replica of the fourth-century seated statue of Constantine. The original is located in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
Behind the market square, turn right into Schillerstraße. Continue over the bridge through the roundabout (second exit) and up the hill on Wiltinger Straße. Turn right onto the third street, Gartenstraße, and then right again onto Martinstraße. To the left of the St. Nikolaus church are the remains of the Roman imperial palace, which is inseparably connected with the church. The Roman poet Ausonius first mentioned the palace in his Mosella in 371 as the residence of Emperor Valentinian I.
Continue cycling along Martinstraße, turn left back onto Wiltinger Straße, and then further left via Pfarrer-Canaris-Weg to the main train station Konz. Through the underpass, you reach Bahnhofstraße. Keep left and turn right at the next intersection into Maierspark. You arrive at the Saar riverbank. Cross the pedestrian crossing and follow the Saar Cycle Path to the right. Behind the bridge, keep right and cycle through the roundabout over the first Saar bridge. In Roman times, an important long-distance road ran over this bridge from Rome to Trier.
Continue straight ahead past the bridge. At the next intersection in the Konz-Könen district, turn left into the street "Am Wiesenkreuz." At the roundabout, take the first exit "An der Granahöhe." Turn left and follow Fuchsgraben street all the way to Tawern.
You cycle straight through Kapellenstraße, Römerstraße, and Bachstraße into the residential area. At the end of Bachstraße, you have the option to make a detour to the Roman street settlement "Vicus Tabernae" (turn left into "In den Brühlmorgen" street; the Vicus is to the right). As a resting station on the Roman main road from Trier via Metz to Rome, this is where the village of Tawern originated. A model of the Roman street settlement is displayed in a pavilion.
Back at the intersection "In den Brühlmorgen," cycle right and then immediately left up Metzenberg to the Roman temple complex. Enjoy the view of the Roman city Trier. Follow the forest path towards Onsdorf. You descend to the right to the K110. Turn left. In Onsdorf, take the first right at the intersection and leave the village via L135. Follow the country road to Nittel. At the village entrance (Windhof), turn left and cycle through Windhof, Neuweg, K108/Weinstraße. Numerous renowned wineries and restaurants invite you to linger on Weinstraße. The Romans cultivated Elbling grapes on the Upper Moselle, which thrive particularly well on muschelkalk soils. Today, the "Southern Wine Moselle" is the largest Elbling cultivation area in Europe.
Arriving at the river, cycle right at Nittel station and follow the Moselle Cycle Path downstream. Admire the limestone cliffs above Nittel and the lovely wine landscape. On the opposite Moselle shore lies Luxembourg. Passing the idyllic wine villages Wellen, Temmels, Oberbillig, and Wasserliesch, you reach the confluence of the Saar and Moselle rivers at Konz.
In Oberbillig, the first electric solar ferry "Sankta Maria II" operates, connecting the German side with Wasserbillig in Luxembourg.
Wasserliesch is known for its special orchid population. A themed trail leads you through the nature reserve "Perfeist."
In Konz, cycle back over the Saar bridge (second bridge). At the roundabout, take the first exit and you are back at your starting point, the Konz Tourist Information.
