The city walk to Landshut Castle offers impressive views and outlooks over the magnificent Moselle cultural landscape!

So far, 19 late Roman hillforts located above the Moselle can be proven, and Landshut Castle was probably the first of its kind, namely handed down by the Geographer of Ravenna as "Princastellum" and giving its name to the later Bernkastel. The castle in Bernkastel was partially built over the medieval core castle – of whose ruins we can still see today.

Insights into the walk:

The Landshut castle ruins majestically tower above the old town of Bernkastel-Kues. It can be reached on foot from the historic market square in Bernkastel in about 30 minutes. The ascent via a serpentine path in the vineyards is vigorous but offers great views! Upon arrival at the castle, there is much to discover. During routine work in 2012, spectacular finds were made that suggest that the remains of the ruins may be the "Princastellum" handed down by the Geographer of Ravenna. It would thus be the first hillfort in the Moselle valley. The return route passes the Schützenhaus.

General information

Directions

A vigorous ascent to Landshut Castle, which is almost essential if you want to conquer the castle on foot. From the medieval market square in Bernkastel, the Burgberg circular trail leads you past the Spitzhäuschen built in 1416. From there, it is signposted clockwise and counterclockwise. We recommend hiking it counterclockwise. The marking then leads you into Karlstraße, onto Schlossweg, into the vineyards, and the narrow and very steep serpentine path up to Landshut Castle (the serpentine path is better to go uphill than downhill). Then it continues once around the castle. The descent back to the town takes you via the castle ascent, a short section over the paved road to the Schützenhaus, the ridge of the castle hill, and the spur. Then back via the footpath to the market square.

Tip

A nice place to stop for refreshments on the descent is the Schützenhaus. From the terrace, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Moselle Valley.
