Kulturkino Kaimt-"Soundtrack to a Coup d´Etat"

Documentation, film essay

In the 1960s, many African states fought for their independence from European colonial powers. While the Soviet Union and other socialist countries supported decolonization, the USA and its Western allies viewed this with skepticism. Their primary interest lay in the natural resources over which they wanted to maintain control. The USA attempted unconventional means and sent jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Nina Simone as ambassadors to African states to present the West positively, while figures like Malcolm X and other jazz artists simultaneously showed solidarity with the independence movement. Director Johan Grimonprez impressively weaves together global power structures, anti-colonial struggles, and a lot of jazz in this historical rollercoaster. An informative, captivating, and emotionally moving film about the decolonial struggle.
