On leisurely forest and field paths, we explore the most renowned top vineyard sites of the Ruwer valley.

This hike, focusing on the top vineyard sites around Mertesdorf and Kasel, runs entirely on easy-to-walk paths and with its length (9 km) and 2-3 hours walking time, is a nice activity for an excursion into the valley near Trier. Especially the sunny location and the slate, which catches the eye everywhere, promote the growth of the wines in this area. Ruwer wines were already known in antiquity.

Directions

We start at the outdoor pool parking lot in Mertesdorf and can immediately orient ourselves on the Ruwer Wine and Slate Trail. We cross the country road and pass Schloss Grünhaus. Following the path, we then keep left and pass an idyllic forest area up to Haus Timpert and the Marian chapel at the Witch's Cross. Behind it, we cross the Ruwer and enter Bahnhofstrasse, which leads to Kasel. Along this, we hike into the wine village. In the village, we keep left and look up to the elevated vineyards. At their foot, we continue hiking through the valley; now it goes uphill again, we cross the district road and walk over meadows back towards Mertesdorf. The last section takes us through beautiful vineyards, and we enjoy the magnificent view of the Ruwer valley. Through the village of Mertesdorf, we reach our starting point at the swimming pool again.
