General information

Sturdy footwear.

Tip

Visit to the Villa Rustica: It has been excellently reconstructed on exposed foundations. With its two corner towers and the columned hall between them, the villa reflects the Roman residential culture of the 3rd century, when this manor house was built. With more than 30 rooms on a floor area of about 50 x 30 m, it was one of the largest complexes of the Gallo-Roman villa type "Bollendorf" common in our region.

Getting there

Access is via the B 53 to Mehring. Then cross the Mehring Moselle bridge and follow the signs "Villa Rustica Mehring."

Parking

There is sufficient parking available at the Villa Rustica. If these parking options are not enough, there are further parking spaces at the Mehring sports facility (about 150 m away).

Public transit

By bus line 220 from Trier via Ruwer, Schweich, Mehring, Leiwen, Trittenheim to Neumagen.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25 000 Schweich holiday region on the Roman Wine Route

ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.

Schweich (Moselle). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Schweich holiday region on the Roman Wine Route”, the Eifelverein supplements its series of hiking maps on the Moselle with the fourth hiking map at a scale of
1 : 25 000. This hiking map series, published by the Eifelverein in cooperation with Mosellandtouristik and the tourist information offices of the municipalities involved, will complete the Eifelverein’s map series after all MOSEL hiking maps for the Moselle region in the southeast are finished.

The new hiking map replaces, with a slightly modified sheet cut, the previously published and now outdated hiking map "Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route" by the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. Hikers will be reliably guided on hiking tours in the Schweich holiday region along Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, Seitensprünge and Traumschleifen. The hiking area Meulenwald is also shown on the map.

With Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, two long-distance hiking trails awarded as "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail" run through the Schweich holiday region on the Roman Wine Route. Not only do the attached circular trails named "Seitensprung" and "Traumschleife" form an extensive and varied hiking trail network in the Schweich holiday region, but this network is also supplemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Moselhöhenweg, further main hiking trails of the Eifelverein, and numerous regional hiking trails also included on the new hiking map. Selected cycle tours and five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Route are also shown on the map.

Despite the extensive offering of hiking and leisure activities shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7 and 8, as well as the five Seitensprünge "Longuicher Sauerbrunnen", "Zitronenkrämerkreuz", "Mehringer Schweiz", "Klüsserather Sagenweg" and "Moselachter", form the core of this new hiking map. Particularly the four Moselsteig stages and the five Seitensprünge are described bilingually in the inner part of the map, and the respective elevation profiles also include indications of the difficulty level of the hike.

The basis for this detailed hiking map is the official topographical map 1 : 25 000 of the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform price of EUR 7.90 and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Mosellandtouristik, in bookstores, and of course also at the Eifelverein e.V., Stürtstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online around the clock via the internet at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
