In the steep slopes of the Mosel, winemakers hustle at work in the vineyard along so-called "Wangertspedcher". It is hardly imaginable that in earlier times the grapes were also transported down to the valley on the 'Wangerstpedchen' (vineyard paths) by donkeys. In the following map, you will find further information about the location of the via ferrata. In 2004, the local community of Thörnich had the idea to stabilize part of these mostly very provisional paths and to open them up for tourists with a signposted system. Since 2006, you can scramble over the Thörnicher Ritsch via ferrata from the car park at the federal road through the vineyard to a beautiful viewpoint. The path is about 1.4 kilometers long.

General information

Safety Guidelines

The footpath leads in places through steep, rocky terrain. Hikers should bring surefootedness and a head for heights.

Equipment

Sturdy footwear required.

Tip

Rest area & meeting point Thörnicher Ritsch:

After hiking the most strenuous part of the via ferrata, a beautiful rest area including an information board welcomes the exhausted hiker. From there, you have a unique view over the Mosel valley from Leiwen through Thörnich to Pölich.

Just above this rest stop, since 2015, there has been the Thörnicher Ritsch meeting point with a large shelter and further resting places.

Thörnicher Ritsch:

The name of the world-famous vineyard site Thörnicher Ritsch is derived from the brittle gray slate of the location; rocks repeatedly slide into the valley. Due to the brittle rocks, field consolidation with path construction cannot be carried out in the Ritsch, as the steep terrain would cause the paths to slip away.

Getting there

The approach is via the B 53 to the Thörnicher Bridge. There are some parking spaces available there. Alternatively, you can cross the Thörnicher Bridge to the other side of the Mosel and then turn sharply right to Thörnich. There are further parking spaces available there.

Parking

The car park at the B 53 can be used. There are also sufficient parking spaces in the center of Thörnich.

Public transit

By bus lines 220 & 221 from Trier to Thörnich.
