The route is 2.9 km long and classified as difficult. Sure-footed hikers with climbing experience can try the steep via ferrata to be mastered. The footpath partly leads through steep, rocky terrain and the difficult sections are equipped with rope protections. The path is marked with "R14" plaques (circular route 14 of the Roman Wine Route holiday region) as well as red-white color markings. Please use only this marked guidance.

From Mehring as well as from the "Waldsee" Riol campsite, you reach the path via the Mosel cycle path. From the Mosel shore, a meadow path runs along the edge of the forest up to the deeply incised Molesbach. A steep zigzag path leads up the forest slope, crosses a forest road, and finally reaches the first rocks. During the ascent, about 200 meters of elevation must be overcome, and the viewpoint Felsenkreuz/ "Kumer Knüppchen" is located at an altitude of 322 m above sea level. From here, the climber has a magnificent panoramic view over Mehring and the Riol valley.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25,000 Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route

ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.

Schweich (Mosel). With the newest MOSEL hiking map titled "Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route," the Eifelverein supplements its series of hiking maps on the Mosel with the now fourth map at a scale of
1 : 25,000. This series of hiking maps, published by the Eifelverein in cooperation with Mosellandtouristik and the tourist offices of the affected municipalities, will complete the Eifelverein's map collection after all MOSEL hiking maps are finished, covering the Mosel section in the southeast.

The new hiking map replaces the previously issued and now outdated hiking map "Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Route" by the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate, with a slightly altered sheet cut. Hikers will be reliably guided on hiking routes in the holiday region Schweich along the Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side trips, and dream loops. The Meulenwald hiking area is also shown on the map.

The Moselsteig and Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, two long-distance hiking trails awarded as "Germany's most beautiful hiking trails," lead through the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route. Not only with the connected circular hiking trails called "side trips" and "dream loops" does the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Route form an extensive and varied hiking network. This network is supplemented by segments of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Moselhöhenweg, as well as other main trails of the Eifelverein and numerous regional hiking paths included on the new map. Selected cycling routes and five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Route are also depicted on the map.

Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8 as well as the five side trips "Longuicher Sauerbrunnen," "Zitronenkrämerkreuz," "Mehringer Schweiz," "Klüsserather Sagenweg," and "Moselachter" form the core of this new hiking map. In particular, these four Moselsteig stages and the five side trips are described bilingually in the map's interior, and the respective elevation profiles also provide information about the difficulty of the hikes.

The basis for this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25,000 by the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform price of 7.90 EUR and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Route, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Mosellandtouristik, bookstores, and of course also from the Eifelverein e. V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online 24/7 via the internet at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
