The Sortengarten in the Moselle village of Zeltingen-Rachtig shines with exotic fruits and shrubs: nestled in famous vineyard sites.
In the Sortengarten of Zeltingen-Rachtig, on a former vineyard area, alongside native shrubs and useful trees, Mediterranean and exotic species have also been planted to test whether they can establish themselves and adapt to climatic conditions.
Insights into the hiking route:
The Sortengarten extends over three sections separated by farm tracks with a total area of 4000 m². It is located on the vineyard slope above the village of Zeltingen. On the smallest and steepest section in the lower slope, nut trees (walnut, sweet chestnut, hazel) are found. The middle section is divided into a quarter representing the genus Sorbus with berry-bearing tree species such as rowan, whitebeam, service tree, and wild pear. One section is assigned to Mediterranean species, and another to exotic non-European woody plants and climbers. In the upper part of the Sortengarten, berry bushes are found, for example on trellises, longer naturalized fruit trees, some with a Mediterranean origin, as well as traditional fruit varieties adapted to the wine-growing climate.
From the Zeltingen marketplace, where the operetta "Zeltinger Himmelreich" is performed every two years, follow St. Stephanstraße up into the vineyards. Passing the church and cemetery, continue on a farm track through an underpass. After the hairpin turn, you will soon reach the unpaved footpath that branches off into the Sortengarten. The Moselsteig is also marked here, leading you steeply up to the hillside edge, to the Zeltingen shooting house, and further on to Bernkastel-Kues.
