General information

Directions

This route description of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig begins in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. From there, the path leads through the Ruwer valley with its vineyards and wine villages to the Hunsrück at Kell am See.
From there it continues via Hermeskeil into the Hunsrück. There the landscape reveals its hilly side. The path crosses the Dollberg ridge and later with the Erbeskopf (816 m) the highest elevation in Rhineland-Palatinate. This section also has a lot to offer in terms of cultural history: the Celtic ring wall near Otzenhausen and the medieval Wildenburg near Kempfeld. Between the ring wall and the Wildenburg, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park in four stages. The section in eastern Hunsrück between Idar-Oberstein and Boppard impresses with the combination of spectacular views with forest passages and natural silence with bizarre gorges. Historical places such as the old town of Idar-Oberstein, the medieval Herrstein, the castle town Kastellaun and the Rhine town Boppard then lie along the hiking trail.
