A steep climb offering plenty of information and magnificent views of the wine-growing villages of Briedel and Pünderich, as well as the Pünderich hillside viaduct.

The Wine Trail leads from the ferry landing on the bank of the Moselle opposite the village all the way up to Marienburg Castle, passing through the single-vineyard site of the same name. After crossing on the Moselle ferry, the trail winds its way up 440 steps and along winding paths, passing 26 information panels that provide details about grape varieties, viticulture, and local history. This turns the steep ascent in the Zellerland region into an entertaining lesson in wine. Along the way, several rest areas and charming views of the Moselle Valley invite you to linger time and again.

Directions

Start: Ferry dock in Pünderich—cross to the opposite side. Please check the current ferry schedule: https://www.puenderich.de/gemeinde_aktuell/ueberfahrtszeiten-faehre-marienburg/.

Just a few steps from the ferry landing, a staircase leads directly into the vineyards. Here you’ll also find the first sign on the wine trail, which leads up to Marienburg.

Stay Hydrated

Bring plenty of drinking water and drink regularly. Especially during hikes and bike rides along the Moselle, the heat can be intense in the summer.

Ticks

Check your body thoroughly after your trip and use a suitable insect repellent if necessary.

Oak processionary moth

Avoid contact with oak processionary moth caterpillars and their webs. The fine stinging hairs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Check the Weather

Check the current weather forecast before starting your hike or bike ride. In case of thunderstorms, heavy rain, or strong winds, you should postpone your trip or end it early.

Stay on the marked trails

Stay on the marked hiking and biking trails. This helps protect nature and yourself, and avoids unnecessary risks.

Forest Fire Risk

Pay special attention to the current wildfire risk, especially during the summer months. Avoid open fires and smoking in the forest and in areas with dry vegetation.

Dogs

Please keep dogs on a leash whenever possible and be considerate of wildlife, grazing animals, and other visitors.

Equipment

Sturdy Footwear

Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear on hiking trails. Nature trails, slate paths, and steep vineyard trails can be slippery, especially after rain.

Headwear

Wear a hat in warm weather. There are very few shaded areas, especially on the open trails through the vineyards.

Sun protection

Apply plenty of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF and protect yourself from intense sunlight.

Tip

A detour to the nearby Prinzenkopf Tower, offering a unique view of the narrow bend in the Moselle and panoramic views of the Eifel and the Hunsrück.

Getting there

Take the B 49 / B 53 to Pünderich, then follow Hauptstraße and Kirchstraße to Moselallee.

Public transit

Take the RE from Koblenz or Trier to Bullay, and from there take bus line 333 to Pünderich.
