Explore extensive natural diversity on high.

From the market place in Burgen, the trail first passes the Schausemühle, then runs along the river Baybach – you will mostly be hiking close to the shores through the Baybach Valley. The trail slowly ascends and leaves the Baybach Valley to continue along the Ortsbach. The trail now becomes significantly steeper and the ascent to the free plateau starts – you will hike across almost the entire plateau and enjoy a magnificent view as far as the Hunsrück. Thereafter, the trail slowly descends back to the valley and runs through the forest and a vineyard back to your starting point. The descent offers hikers spectacular views.

Directions

This varied circular trail starts right at the market place in Burgen, first on the Baybachstraße and then it crosses the Baybach stream on a small bridge. In the town, the suburban road leads as a path through gardens and after a short distance back to the Baybachstraße. Here, the trail follows, after crossing the Baybach one more time, a short stretch of the road. At the outskirts of the town you will reach the Schmausemühle (fancy a stop?), here you cross the road to get to the safer walkway on the other side of the road. Continue for a short distance to the end of the walkway, then cross the road again, and you will find yourself on the footbridge over the stream in the midst of nature! For the next 2 km the Borjer Ortsbachpädche follows the course of the Baybach – mostly very close to the shore and with a curvy course which guarantees you won't get bored! With each curve, the perspective changes. Information boards provide insights into the history and give interesting information about the flora and fauna of the Hunsrückbach, which is almost 30 km long and covers an altitude of approximately 400 meters.

The height difference, which the Borjer Ortsbachpädchen overcomes on the first section, is hardly noticeable, that's how gently the path ascends next to the stream. At a large meadow with fruit trees, the path leaves the stream, runs through the forest and then reaches the road. Now it's only a few meters on the footpath next to the road, then the path leaves the Baybachtal. In sight, but a little away from the Borjer Ortsbachpädchen, is the Forellenhof, where you can stop for a bite to eat and regain your strength for the rest of the trail. The path now ascends a little more. In the forest, you hike along the stream, the Ortsbach. The mountain hut Waldesruh is quickly reached and a lovely place for a break – especially on hot days, because here, close to the stream, it stays cool for a long time.

Now, the steep climb follows. This section also takes you uphill into the forest, and once the slope decreases a little, you can enjoy the view of the high forest a little more relaxed. At the Zwergenhütte at the edge of the forest, you have managed the bulk of the ascent. How about taking another break at one of the many resting places?

Then the path leads over the open plateau straight to the Birkenhof. Here, it sharply changes direction to the right and takes you on to a dirt road, which completely crosses the plateau and allows for a fabulous view of the Hunsrück. This view expands to a unique panorama at the so-called "Dörferblick" (view of the villages). Across the Baybachtal you see numerous Hunsrück villages, there is an information board with additional information. Once you have seen enough, you can make a detour to the nearby Schinderhanneshöhle (Schinderhannes Cave), one of many interesting rock formations. The path to the rock formation surprises with a fantastic view of the valley towards Burgen.

The Borjer Ortsbachpädche now leads over an open hilltop, then the path slowly descends into the valley and reaches the forest again. Continue on a forest path downhill. Both places offer you surprising and spectacular views. You will see the Moselle, Castle Bischofsstein on the other side of the valley, and of course more castles. On the opposite side of the Moselle Valley slope edge you can watch paragliders take off, weather permitting. The path now continues steeply downhill. From the forest path you change onto a more narrow path, which still takes you downhill. The forest opens up a bit, and you finally reach the vineyard area above the village. Steps take you to the outskirts of the town at the Römerstraße. Continue a little downhill on the steps, strolling past the church and you are back at your starting point, the market square. On your way there, you will discover various places to enjoy regional fares.
