After breathtaking vantage points on alpine paths above the Würzlay vineyard, which gives it its name, you'll take a leisurely walk across the fields of the Maifeld before returning to the starting point at the Hubertushöhe vista.

On the first half of the trail, hikers can expect a wild mix of short landscape changes with wine and forest. From the sports park Lehmen it goes first over a wooded nature trail Note the recommended running direction after the start! Parallel to the village, after about 1 km, the trail turns into an alpine path above the Würzlay vineyard. Breathtaking viewpoints on the alpine path with many partly longer ascents and descents above the name-giving vineyard Würzlay reward the hiker. Larger viewing plateaus at the end of the trail and at Ausoniusstein lead into the Flachsbach valley through the Ausoniusstein nature reserve. The trail continues leisurely across the fields of the Maifeld before returning to the starting point at the Hubertushöhe overlook.

General information

Directions

Starting from the Lehmen Sports Park, you will first walk along a wooded nature trail. Please note the recommended running direction after the start! Parallel to the village, after about 1 km you will enter the alpine path above the vineyard of the Würzlay. Here you can expect many changes of Mediterranean climate and shaded deciduous trees. These changes are accompanied by partly very steep ascents and descents and many changes of direction.  At longer passages it is difficult to avoid 2 people, therefore the recommended running direction. You will be rewarded by many breathtaking viewpoints. Benches and rest areas are available at several points. Likewise, there are indications of rescue points. The alpine passage ends at a small viewing plateau. A short detour along the Maifeld leads to the Ausoniushütte site. There is a spur trail to the Ausoniusstein, a cantilevered rock above the Moselle, on which the famous Roman poet and prince educator Decimus Magnus Ausonius (310-393) but never was 😉. Then you climb into the Flachsbach valley, over a small ford it goes up again before the Maifeld village of Moselsürsch. The trail continues through the Ausoniusstein nature reserve until you finally reach the plateau of the Maifeld again. As there are good conditions here for the endangered lark, the trail makes a detour along an asphalt path before continuing along the edge of the forest parallel to the Moselle. The way back is rewarded with another spectacular view on the Hubertushöhe.  After a short steep descent, it goes back to the starting point.

Safety Guidelines

For your own safety and to protect the flora and fauna, please always stay on the marked trails. The trail is sometimes steep, difficult and slippery in rainy or winter weather. Therefore surefootedness and good physical condition are essential.

NOTE:

We endeavour to announce on this platform all closures that occur due to forest work or hunting parties. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or diversion, we ask that you follow the instructions for your own safety.

Dangerous situations:

If an emergency situation arises, help is needed quickly. And even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the quickest. These are located in places that are easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you make your emergency call. This way, the emergency services will know where to find you.
