60 km long cycle tour from Bernkastel via the Graach sheep farm into the Hunsrück. Via the archaeology park Belginum, Gonzerath and the Haardtkopf back to the Moselle.

The round tour can be started either from Bernkastel-Kues, the Graach sheep farm, Mülheim or Veldenz. Bernkastel-Kues, one of the possible starting points of the cycle tour, is considered the centre of the Middle Moselle. The historic old town with its numerous half-timbered houses is particularly worth seeing.

Insights into the cycle tour:

From Bernkastel, the tour leads via the Graach sheep farm into the forests of the Hunsrück. A particular highlight is the Belginum archaeology park - well worth a stopover. The route then continues through picturesque Hunsrück villages to the stage destinations of Longkamp and Monzelfeld and on to Veldenz. Here, in one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Moselle, the former county of Veldenz, which consisted of several villages along the Moselle and Hunsrück, had its headquarters. This is followed by Mülheim, the home of the famous Zeppelin wine, and downstream on the Moselle - just before Bernkastel-Kues - the "golden" Andel, whose gold-digger well is a reminder of times past.

General information

Directions

If you choose Bernkastel-Kues as your starting point, the route takes you steadily uphill from the Moselle valley, up to the Moselle spur between Bernkastel and Trarbach. The gradient is considerable and long lasting. During the ascent through the vineyards you can enjoy great views of the Moselle valley and Bernkastel-Kues. You leave the vineyards in the direction of Graacher Schäferei.Through the Graacher Schäferei, with a short push at the end of the village, you continue on a well constructed road up to the plateau. Along the route of the B50n, which is currently under construction, the tour leads you to Longkamp with a steady ascent. Via the small village of Kommen you cycle on less frequented roads to the archaeology park Belginum. Here a longer break is worthwhile. The tour continues along the old Roman road via Gonzerath and through meadows and forests to Elzerath, from where you can climb the highest point of the tour, the Haardtkopf. Over well-built forest paths you will drive steadily uphill to its crest. After leaving the forest above Gornhausen, you are greeted by a magnificent view of the Eifel. On well-maintained field paths you now ride continuously downhill to Burgen and on to Veldenz. From Veldenz the path leads you through rather flat vineyards to Mülheim. From there you take the Moselle cycle path back to Bernkastel.

Safety Guidelines

Please note that the tour is not signposted. In the Graacher Schäferei there is a short stretch of about 30 metres on which the bike should be pushed due to the steepness and the narrow path.

Equipment

The tour should be easy to manage with an eBike (full battery) despite the considerable ascent from the Moselle valley up. For sporty cyclists a trekking bike or mountain bike is a good option.

Tip

Refreshment stops are available in all towns along the route. The romantic old town of Bernkastel is particularly worth seeing.
