The Maare-Mosel Cycle Path leads the cycling holidaymaker along the former railway track through two regions: the cultural landscapes of the Moselle and the Eifel.
Insights into the bike tour:
Cyclists especially appreciate this cycle path on the Moselle: it connects the impressive Moselle cultural landscape with its vineyards and romantic villages with the rugged and romantic volcanic Eifel. Over viaducts and countless bridges, through cool tunnels and the deep forests of the Eifel, past extinct volcanic lakes and deep blue maars, it leads down into the Moselle wine region. On the eight cycling adventure loops, you learn a lot about the land and people; numerous refreshment stops along the route offer cyclist-friendly rest areas and meals.
Between Bernkastel-Kues and Daun, the RadBus operates. It is recommended to take the bus from Bernkastel-Kues to Daun and cycle back to Bernkastel-Kues. Online reservation for bike transport on the RadBus (up to four hours before departure) at www.radbusse.de or at the Moselle Guest Center in Bernkastel-Kues.
The Maare-Mosel Cycle Path is passable in both directions, but it is mainly used by most cyclists, inline skaters, and hikers from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues. The RadBus offers comfortable transport with the bike bus to the desired starting point of the route. Starting from the train station in Daun, you begin your bike ride towards the Moselle Valley. Soon you will pass a 28-meter high viaduct with a magnificent view of the district town of Daun. You ride slightly uphill through a wooded area until you reach the "Großes Schlitzohr," a 560-meter long former railway tunnel. On a flat track, the cycle path leads you past the Schalkenmehrener Maar and the Sangweiher nature reserve. In Gillenfeld, you can be tempted by one of the adventure loops to the Pulvermaar. Around Daun and Manderscheid, you can "experience" the area on eight cycling adventure loops. During a boat tour on the Pulvermaar, you can enjoy the crystal-clear water and the natural tranquility. Shortly thereafter, you can pass by the "Lavabomben-Route" adventure loop at the Vulkanhaus Strohn, a well-known museum in the Vulkaneifel European Geopark. Here, you have the opportunity to marvel at the mighty lava fissures, smell volcanic gases, and explore the accessible experience rooms. A 120-ton lava ball, which towers at the exit of Strohn, is a real eye-catcher, especially for children. From Eckfeld, it is only a short distance to Pantenburg, where you can leisurely roll down to Niedermanderscheid. Particularly worth seeing here are the magnificent fortress complexes of the lower and upper castles. Every year on the last weekend of August, the Manderscheid Castle Festival takes place here. This nationally known event offers knight tournaments and castle lady costumes, food and drinks as in medieval times, as well as spectacles and plays.
Manderscheid also offers another highlight with the Maar Museum. Children and families are captivated by the walk-in model of a maar and the fossil area.
From Manderscheid, you cycle uphill three kilometers back to Pantenburg on the main cycle path. After that, it is only downhill through a wonderful railway landscape into the Moselle Valley, characterized by vineyards and slopes. Just behind Plein, the cycle path tunnels through the volcanic rock for 500 meters. Surrounded by deciduous and mixed forests, you continue into the saddle maker town of Wittlich. After passing through the town, the openness of the Wittlich valley with its first vineyards opens up. It is now not far to the medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues. From Wittlich, you cycle through forests into the Lieser Valley. At the wine village of Lieser, this river flows into the Moselle. The Maare-Mosel Cycle Path officially ends here; along the Moselle, it is only 3 km to Bernkastel-Kues.
