Accompany the wild-romantic Lieser on its way from the source at Boxberg in the Vulkaneifel to its mouth into the Mosel in the eponymous village of Lieser.

The Lieserpfad runs parallel to the river course and offers an enormously diverse hiking route. It goes over narrow paths and wide ways, over bridges, uphill and downhill. The Lieser invites you to breathe in the landscape, feel the earth's history, and taste closeness to nature. On your way, you will encounter volcanoes, castles, old oaks, and deep valleys. Wide views over sublime landscapes and fragrant meadows will be your constant companions. In short: the perfect environment to travel consciously slowly and enjoy the original power of the earth. Benches at selected places repeatedly offer opportunities to rest and pause – here you clearly feel the closeness to nature, as only a few roads lead through the Lieser valley. In Lieser, the eponymous mouth at the Mosel, you look back on 74 fascinatingly varied kilometers. And maybe you'll agree with Manuel Andrack, who declared the Lieserpfad the "most beautiful hiking trail in the world."

Directions

Stage 1 - Boxberg - Daun
15 km, 3.5 - 4.5 hours, 210 m elevation difference
Through the Struth with a beautiful view of the legendary Hilgerather Church, the first section of the Lieserpfad (formerly Lieser source path) starts. It leads you past the Neichen and Rengen Dreesen, two carbonated springs of volcanic origin. Take a well-deserved break under the nature reserve monument of an ancient oak between Neichen and Nerdlen.

Stage 2 - Daun - Manderscheid
18 km, 4-5 hours, 220 m elevation difference
This section of the Lieserpfad initially offers solitude and quiet, as it runs through the Lieser valley along green meadows and later through bright oak groves, finally ending with a highlight: the rocky path above the river and the castles of Manderscheid.

Stage 3 - Manderscheid - Wittlich
23 km, 6-7 hours, 227 m elevation difference
This stage largely leads over narrow, partly rocky paths through the deeply cut landscape valley of the Lieser. Highlighted are the repeatedly new and partly breathtaking viewpoints on this section: noteworthy besides the magnificent views of the upper and lower castles of Manderscheid are the Schmitthütte, the Pellenzkanzel, the Robertskanzel, and the viewing platform on the Burgberg near Karl.

Stage 4 - Wittlich - Lieser
18 km, 3.5-4.5 hours, 155 m elevation difference
The last stage day starts in the historic town center of Wittlich and leads the hiker across the Wittlich basin. Passing sturdy sandstone rocks, the old Roman villa and along forest, field, and meadow paths, the Lieser and the hiking path wind their way to the Mosel. From the wine and destination town of Lieser, the Moselsteig leads via the medieval Bernkastel-Kues to Koblenz and over Osann-Monzel, the hiking trail leads to Trier.

Equipment

Good hiking shoes and poles for the uphill and downhill sections.
