The famous vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer" lends its name to this hike on the Mosel. The route leads through the vineyards - and the Mosel is always in sight!
The circular route is high above the Mosel - directly opposite the village Brauneberg.
The hiking trail passes under the "Brauneberg sundial." Sundials are a distinctive feature and an award for the best vineyard slopes on the Mosel. Next to the sundial is also a weather station. This regularly measures the highest temperatures in the country in the vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer." Usually, the associated vineyards are named after the village; in Brauneberg, it is the other way around. Because until 1925, the village was called Dusemond.
Insights into the hiking tour:
The Brauneberger Jufferweg offers a wonderful panorama and fascinating views of the Middle Mosel. It leads through the vineyard and is easy to hike. Besides magnificent views, the historic Roman pressing plants are a special highlight of this hike.
There are no dining options along the way, but a lovely hiker's hut with a great view!
The hiker parking lot on Brauneberg - located in the forest on the Mosel side opposite the village of the same name - is the starting point of this hike. Along vineyard paths, you hike parallel to the forest edge over Brauneberg towards Osann-Monzel. Along the way, you have an almost continuous beautiful view over the Mosel loops and the wine village Brauneberg. Quick question: What do Brauneberg and Pisa have in common? The leaning tower! You can see it from the current viewpoint in the vineyards. Not only the pleasant temperatures make Brauneberg a holiday destination with a Mediterranean flair. With a remarkable tilt of 96 cm, the tower of the parish church of St. Remigius, built in 1776/77, also holds its own compared to its famous counterpart in Italian Pisa. As in Pisa, a mistaken analysis of the subsoil caused the subsequent tilting in Brauneberg. With its striking onion dome, it is unique in the entire Mosel area. Also unique in the holiday region is the use of the parish church as a so-called simultaneum (shared church): Catholics and Protestants have been using the church together since its construction.
On the sunlit hiking trail through the Juffer vineyard, you reach a flagpole after about 3 km - in the middle of the vineyards. From here, you enjoy a view of the "wine village with a view" Osann-Monzel. At this junction, the hike turns left onto a lower vineyard path. This path takes you past the "Brauneberg sundial." Sundials from the late Middle Ages - a symbol for only a few top vineyard sites - are a guarantee of outstanding wine quality. The Brauneberg sundial is the only sundial that is adjusted from daylight saving time to standard time. Next to this sundial is the ARD weather station: here on August 11, 1998, the record temperature of 41.2 °C in the shade was measured.
After 4 kilometers, follow the Rebherz signposting and take a gently descending vineyard path on the right around the bend. In the next curve, the path winds to the left towards the Roman pressing plant. The hiking trail now runs through vineyards parallel to the federal road on the Mosel. The sweet mountain - Dulcis mons - was what the Romans called the ridge in Brauneberg, at the foot of which the pressing plant is located: a nice place to rest. The best-known vineyard site of the village - and one of the most renowned on the Mosel - owes its name: Brauneberger Juffer. During the land consolidation work, two Roman pressing plants were discovered: The later found pressing plant, almost a mirror image of the first, was restored and rebuilt in the 1990s. The stone at the pressing plant's main beam is still the original stone. It is one of the oldest pressing plants north of the Alps. With the excavation and restoration of the facilities in the wine towns of Piesport and Erden, scientific evidence shows that the oldest Roman pressing plants north of the Alps are located in the Middle Mosel region. So the cradle of wine growing in Germany is here: on the Middle Mosel! After a small refreshment, you return towards the Mülheim bridge. Here, a rising road with three sharp turns leads you back to the starting point: the hiker's hut on Brauneberg.
The path is family- and stroller-friendly; hiking or trekking shoes are sufficient.
Hiking boots are not absolutely necessary. But if you are out in summer, sunscreen is. On the tour through the sunny vineyard, shade is scarce.
