A loop hike through forests and vineyards around the village of Zell-Barl, offering magnificent views of the Moselle Valley.
Right from the start of the hike, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the unique wine-growing landscape of the Zellerland region. The trail winds through forests and vineyards, circling the village of Zell-Barl. As you explore the Moselle from every direction, you’ll be repeatedly rewarded with beautiful views of the Moselle Valley and the wine-growing towns of Zell (Moselle) and Pünderich.
Start: Parking lot below Marienburg – head toward Zell (Barl) and follow the path on the left uphill – walk a short distance through the Zell-Barl residential area, then continue straight ahead into the forest and through the vineyards. Behind the senior center, take a sharp left down the steps—keep to the right and continue through the vineyards to the main road—walk a short distance along the main road—turn left diagonally across the street onto the hiking trail—continue along the forest path to the “Schwanzhütte” lookout point - From there, follow the path straight down to the starting point.
Your safety is our top priority. By preparing well and following the safety guidelines below, you’ll create the best conditions for a safe outdoor experience.
Stay Hydrated
Bring plenty of drinking water and drink regularly. Especially during hikes and bike rides along the Moselle, the heat can be intense in the summer.
Ticks
Check your body thoroughly after your trip and use a suitable insect repellent if necessary.
Oak processionary moth
Avoid contact with oak processionary moth caterpillars and their webs. The fine stinging hairs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.
Check the Weather
Check the current weather forecast before starting your hike or bike ride. In case of thunderstorms, heavy rain, or strong winds, you should postpone your trip or end it in a timely manner.
Stay on the marked trails
Stay on the marked hiking and biking trails. This helps protect nature and yourself, and avoids unnecessary risks.
Forest Fire Risk
Pay special attention to the current risk of wildfires, especially during the summer months. Avoid open fires and smoking in the forest and in areas with dry vegetation.
Dogs
Please keep dogs on a leash whenever possible and be considerate of wildlife, grazing animals, and other visitors.
Emergency
In an emergency, you can reach emergency services throughout Europe by dialing 112. Provide your location as precisely as possible and, if possible, use your cell phone’s location feature.
Sturdy Footwear
Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear on hiking trails. Nature trails, slate paths, and steep vineyard trails can be slippery, especially after rain.
Headwear
Wear a hat in warm weather. There are very few shaded areas, especially on the open trails through the vineyards.
Sun protection
Apply plenty of sunscreen with an appropriate SPF and protect yourself from intense sunlight.
Stop for a break at the old ferry house (weather permitting: Easter through October, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
Coming from Alf, follow the B53 toward Zell-Kaimt and turn right toward Zell-Barl. Take the next right toward Marienburg.
Parking available below Marienburg
Take the train to Bullay and then take bus line 721 to the Zell-Barl Hospital (the Horgar Trail starts below the hospital), or take bus line 720 to Pünderich and from there take the ferry across to the other side of the Moselle. Here is the link to the Pünderich ferry.
