The Geierlay cycle route connects the castle town of Kastellaun in the Hunsrück with the Geierlay suspension bridge, Germany's most beautiful suspension bridge.
The 35 km circular route starts in Kastellaun and leads over asphalt and gravel paths through the towns of Völkenroth, Leideneck, Mastershausen, Sosberg, Mörsdorf, where the suspension bridge must be crossed on foot while pushing the bike. The return route goes via Mörz, Buch, and Bell back to Kastellaun.
The bike route starts at the old station in Kastellaun. From Kastellaun, we take the Schinderhannes cycle path, which gently ascends through the new development area towards Bell station. Here we cross the Hunsrückhöhenstraße (B 327) and continue towards Bell. The route continues through the villages of Buch and Mörz. In Mörz, we can admire the pilgrimage church of Mariä Himmelfahrt. From Mörz, we cycle on towards Mörsdorf. Here we approach the highest point of the route, the Geierlay suspension bridge. As soon as we reach the Geierlay bridge, the bicycle becomes a "push object" because it is forbidden to ride on this 85 cm narrow and 360 m long bridge. Once you have crossed the bridge, you can get back in the saddle. After a short ride, we reach the village of Sosberg. Then we ride down serpentines into the valley. Here a rest area invites you to take a break, because after that it goes uphill again. The path leads past Mastershausen towards the Galgenturm. It was built as a replica of a watchtower on the Roman Limes and reminds of the old Roman road that ran nearby. It is recommended to climb the Galgenturm because on clear days it offers a magnificent view over the Hunsrück as far as the Eifel and the Siebengebirge. The tour then takes us to Leideneck and further via Völkenroth and Rothenbergerhof back to Kastellaun. We ride over the festival site of the Beller Market (big market day always on the penultimate Wednesday in July) before returning to Kastellaun via Bell station.
Observe traffic rules, pay attention to other road users, and ride at an appropriate speed, especially on descents. Be considerate to other cyclists and pedestrians.
THE photo motif par excellence is the Geierlay suspension bridge with 360 meters length and 100 meters height! Those who have some time can also visit the famous Beller Kuhscheune near Bell and make a detour to the Bell lookout tower, enjoying the view over the Hunsrück heights. In Bell, you can also find the animal adventure park where tigers, pumas, and native wild animals roam.
