The circular route starts in the Saar-Mosel town of Konz. You cycle through wine villages of the Konzer Valley, continuing over the Saar bike path to Saarburg (tip: waterfall). Pure cycling pleasure!
Cycling experience, wine landscape, cultural highlights!
From the town of Konz, where the Saar and Moselle rivers meet, cycle along the heights through the districts of Konz and wine villages. Passing the oil mill in Niedermennig, you experience the Konzer Valley in its wine-rich beauty. Further down towards Wiltingen, you reach the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve.
Via the flat Saar bike path, you reach the small town of Saarburg with many cultural highlights. We recommend a detour to the waterfall in the middle of the old town and a visit to the castle complex. On the way back, you pass the world-famous vineyard Ayler Kupp. Along the Saar canal, you cycle past the lock in Kanzem and back to Konz.
Tip: Pass under the Konz bridge – a little further along the bike path, you reach the confluence of the Saar and Moselle.
You start at the Tourist Information Konz, Saarstr. 1.
Through "Brückenstraße", passing left by the Konz main train station, you reach the roundabout/ "Paul-Magar-Platz". Take the third exit. Follow the bike signposts and turn right at the next intersection through the street "An der Lichtsmühle" and continue through "Lindenstraße" to the Konz indoor swimming pool. Here begins the bike path through the Konzer Valley, which owes its formation to the former course of the Moselle around Kommlinger Berg.
Cycle past the Marienkapelle, over "Falkensteinstraße" towards Niedermennig. A short detour to the oil mill is worthwhile here. Through the village centre ("Kapellenstraße" - "Zum Sonnenberg" - "Blumenwiese") you reach Obermennig ("Im Sonnenschein" - second street on the right "Zum Weiher").
Leaving the village, follow the bike path to the left to Oberemmel ("Agritiusstraße"). Admire the old manor houses. At Maximinerplatz turn right. Over the street "Am Rosenberg", past the vineyards, it goes downhill through the wine village Wiltingen. At the entrance to Wiltingen you will find the 1.8 km long circular trail of the wine educational path. Cross "Warsbergerstraße" and follow Brückenstraße to the Saar bike path. Cross the bridge. After the bridge turn left and cycle along the Saar bike path over the dam at Schoden, which serves to regulate the water flow and generate electricity. Further upstream to the small town of Saarburg. Visit the historic old town with waterfall and amusement museum, bell foundry museum, mill museum or the castle complex high above the town.
After crossing the old town bridge, you travel downstream on the Saar bike path to Ayl-Biebelhausen. Looking at the other side of the Saar, the Bismarck tower rises above the wine village Schoden.
Before the bridge turn left off the Saar shore and cycle over "Saarstraße" - "Saarburger Straße" - turn right at "Im Peterfeld" - continue left over "Biebelhausener Str." to the wine village Ayl. In doing so, you bypass the Umlaufberg Ayler Kupp – a world-famous vineyard where top-class Saar Riesling wines grow. At the village exit follow the farm road on the right, which runs parallel to the B51. Leave the path to the right towards Wawern. In the vineyards above the village, the village settlement history of Saar and Moselle is exemplarily presented on a 4.8 km long circular historical trail at authentic sites.
Through the village centre you pass the former synagogue and reach the Saar again via the street "Unterm Herrenberg". Behind the bridge, cycle downstream and cross the lock system at Kanzem. Follow the bank bike path to the right towards Konz-Könen. On the opposite river side, you see the baroque church from 1720 in Filzen-Hamm.
At the entrance to Konz-Könen, leave the Saar bike path and cycle through the residential area, past the church and turn right into "Könener Straße". At the roundabout you turn right again onto the Saar bike path. A few meters behind the Saar bridge is the confluence of Saar and Moselle. Cross the bridge and you are back at the starting point, Tourist Information Konz.
If you’re not tired yet, visit the open-air museum Roscheider Hof in the elevated district of Konz-Roscheid (approx. 2 km, 110 meters elevation). There is plenty to discover on 21 hectares of open space and 4000 sqm of exhibition space.
Have fun cycling!
