In the westernmost part of the Rhineland-Palatinate cycling enthusiasts find a charming cycling route amid large forests, peculiar crags and sunlit vineyards. The former towpaths grant the joy of exercise free from any traffic.
The cycling tour starts on the Moselle bank in Trier from where you continue upstream on the Mosel Cycle Path to Konz. There you change to the Saar Cycle Path on the right river bank following the unspoilt course of the river, embedded in vineyards, until Kanzem. In Schoden you reach the river fork, which - together with the weir - was created to extend the Saar to a large shipping lane. From Schoden onwards you travel until Saarburg. The picturesque town is characterised by its eponymous ruin and the romantic old town with its town square and milling museum. A special attraction in the centre of the town is the Leukbach waterfall with a height of 20m, which plunges into the valley among the timber-framed houses and baroque buildings powering the mill wheels of the former Hachenberger mill. After a stopover, you follow the Saar Cycle Path on the left side of the river, along the Saar Canal, heading back towards your starting point. In Konz, where Emperor Valentinian once resided during the summer, you cross the Saar shortly before it flows into the Moselle and return to the Mosel Cycle Path, which takes you back to the Roman city of Trier.
Completely on your own paths and cycle tracks, almost exclusively in flat terrain. The track is mainly tarmacked, in some places paved or gravelled.
