The hiking route through the forest from 2012 connects very beautiful sections of the Meulenwald with stunning views over the Mosel Valley and the Vordereifel.

The circular route runs through hilly terrain in the Meulenwald with several quite challenging ascents. The route is 19.0 km long and is classified as medium-hard to difficult. With breaks, one should plan 6-7 hours, whereby the route length can be very well halved at the junction near Föhren Castle.

Opposite the tithe barn at Föhren Castle stands the column canopy made of red sandstone with Jesus on the cross. The monument is also called the "Dicker Herrgott" (Fat Lord) and one wonders why nothing appears fat here. The name refers to another cross, the remains of which are still visible in the parish church. A poem tells the story of a hunter who, hearing a wolf without cartridges, begged the Lord not to be killed by the wolf and promised to place a cross on the Burgberg and always pray there. Well, a hunter is not a stonemason, and thus a rather bulky cross resulted, the Fat Lord.

The Meulenwald circular route is particularly suitable as a forest and shade-rich alternative to the Mosel hiking trails in the Roman Wine Road collective municipality on hot summer days. At the end of the round trip, after about 19 km, feet will love a cool bath. The Heilbrunnen Schweich, simultaneously the start and end point of the route, is not only a constructed complex composed of source, wayside chapel, stations path, and wayside cross in a garden setting, but also offers a refreshing water treading pool.

The route is marked with “R 1”.

New: Hiking map 1 : 25,000 Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road

ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.

Schweich (Mosel). With the latest MOSEL hiking map titled “Holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road”, the Eifelverein adds its fourth hiking map at the scale of
1 : 25,000 to its hiking map series along the Mosel. This hiking map series, which the Eifelverein publishes in cooperation with Mosellandtouristik and the tourist offices of the affected municipalities, will complete the Eifelverein map collection after the completion of all MOSEL hiking maps with the Mosel section in the southeast.

The new hiking map replaces the previously published and now outdated hiking map “Neumagen-Dhron, Schweich on the Roman Wine Road” by the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate, with only slight changes to the map cut. Hikers will be reliably guided with the new hiking map on the hiking routes in the Schweich holiday region along the Moselsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, side routes, and dream loops. The hiking area Meulenwald is also shown on the map.

Both the Moselsteig and the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, awarded as "Germany's most beautiful hiking trails", run through the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road. Along with the connected circular hiking paths named “side route” and “dream loop”, the holiday region Schweich on the Roman Wine Road forms an extensive and varied network of hiking trails. This network is supplemented by sections of the Eifelsteig with two partner routes, the Mosel Höhenweg, as well as other main hiking trails of the Eifelverein and numerous regional hiking paths, all included on the new map. Selected bicycle routes and five mountain bike routes on the Roman Wine Road are also depicted on the map.

Despite the extensive hiking and leisure offerings shown on the map, the Moselsteig stages 5, 6, 7, and 8, as well as the five side routes “Longuicher Sauerbrunnen”, “Zitronenkrämerkreuz”, “Mehringer Schweiz”, “Klüsserather Sagenweg”, and “Moselachter” form the core of this new hiking map. The four Moselsteig stages and the five side routes are not only described bilingually in the inner part of the map, but also display the elevation profile and provide information on the difficulty level of the hikes.

The basis for this detailed hiking map is the official topographic map 1 : 25,000 of the State Office for Surveying and Geobasis Information Rhineland-Palatinate. The map costs a uniform price of 7.90 EUR and is available at the Tourist Information Roman Wine Road, Brückenstraße 46, 54338 Schweich, at Mosellandtouristik, and in bookstores as well as, of course, from the Eifelverein e. V., Stürtzstraße 2 - 6 in 52349 Düren. The map can also be ordered online around the clock at www.eifelverein.de . ISBN: 978-3-944620-13-8.
