This easy walk starts in the Wintrich district Kasholz and leads through the "Wintrich Chestnut Grove" – here you will find numerous sweet chestnut trees along the route.

The walk through the "Wintrich Chestnut Grove" leads through sweet chestnut stands over 130 years old, which count among the largest contiguous chestnut forests in Rhineland-Palatinate. Sweet chestnuts have a delicately sweet, nutty, and slightly mealy taste. Nowadays, one rarely sees chestnut sellers offering roasted chestnuts in city centers during winter. The path is especially suitable for people seeking peace, relaxation and deceleration. In the midst of the forest away from hustle and bustle, nature can be fully enjoyed.

Insights into the hike:

From the forest parking lot, the route leads clockwise over shady forest paths through the woods. A clearing offers a view of the distant Mosel hills. The highlight of the hike is the many sweet chestnut trees along the path. There are no dining options along the route, so it is recommended to bring packed food.

General information

Directions

The hiking path starts at the Kasholz forest parking lot. It leads straight into the forest. The ground is – and continuously – typical forest soil. There are some ruts – caused by forest work – but they are nothing to speak of.

After about 300 meters, you walk slightly downhill and come to a junction. The path now leads to the right and rises slightly. However, it progresses very leisurely and in some loops. After about 1.3 kilometers, the forest opens up to a small clearing about 300 meters long, dominated by fir trees. Then you continue through a dense mixed forest section. After another 400 meters, you come to another fork. The hiking path now turns right, slightly steeper for the first time. However, this ascent lasts only about 100 meters. Now the road is visible again. But you do not walk back to the parking lot on this road. Instead, you turn sharply right, back into the forest. This section is also shared with the Kasholz path. In a leisurely zig-zag course, you stroll through the forest and approach the end of the hike. The last 100 meters run directly next to the road, but on a wide hiking path.
