A bit less known, but all the more charming: the Salm cycle path takes you through attractive meadow valleys and historic towns to the mouth of the Salm into the Mosel. From Klüsserath, you then continue on the Mosel cycle path, passing world-famous vineyards and numerous Roman traces all the way to Trier.
Cycle along the Salm and Mosel to Trier.
Start: Cycle from your accommodation to Trier main station and take the train from there to Sehlem.
From Sehlem station, cycle to the right, first on the road and then on an adjacent cycle path slightly downhill (the Sehlem commercial area is on the left). At the crossroad (K 41), keep left until after a few meters you reach the main road (L 141). Cross this carefully. You will now cycle downhill through Bahnhofstraße into Sehlem. This later becomes Klausener Straße (from now on you are on the Salm cycle path), on which you will eventually leave Sehlem again. You pass under the main road (L 47 from Sehlem to Klausen) and shortly behind the ramp to this main road, turn left towards the sports center. You cycle around the sports center with tennis courts and a football pitch and reach another road. Follow this left to Esch. You cross the Salm and cycle into the town. In Esch, follow the main road through the right curve. In the next left curve, leave the main road again and continue along the Salm cycle path towards Klüsserath and Rivenich.
You leave Esch and cycle a short stretch parallel to the A 1 motorway and then pass under it. After crossing the Salm again, you reach the town of Rivenich. At the main road (Moselstraße), keep left and cycle towards the town center. On the right you can see the church. Continue a little further along the main road (Moselstraße) and leave it at the next left curve, continuing straight on through Weinstraße through a residential area. The road later rises and you leave the residential area. You cycle uphill through the forest until you reach a junction. Here you follow the Salm cycle path downhill, sometimes along vineyards, sometimes through the forest to Klüsserath. After passing a small water mill, you reach Hetzerather Straße. Follow this left to the main road and then left again over the bridge over the Salm. At the following T-junction, follow the main road to the right through Hauptstraße to Klüsserath church. Here is the official end of the Salm cycle path.
At the church, turn right into Kirchstraße and then again right into Mittelstraße, which you follow until Bundesstraße 53. At the federal road, keep right again and follow it parallel on a cycle lane. You pass under the Mosel bridge at Thörnich and then cycle over it across the Mosel. To get to Thörnich and the Mosel cycle path, go directly at the end of the bridge, where the road bends left, through the gap in the guardrails down to Thörnich or the Mosel cycle path. Follow the Mosel cycle path on the right, always parallel to the Mosel, upstream to Trier. You pass the wine villages of Detzem, Mehring and Longuich.
Shortly before Schweich, you pass under the motorway bridge as well as a smaller bridge and come up to a road. Here keep left and cross the bridge to Schweich.
On the left bank, continue on the Mosel cycle path, past the Schweich ferry tower and campsite, further to Trier. You pass Schweich – Issel and the Trier district of Quint and reach the Trier district of Ehrang. Before Ehrang, you pass under the B 53 and shortly after another bridge. Beyond this, sharply left on the Mosel cycle path and 50 m later sharply right. Finally, you cross the Kyll. Here the Kylltal cycle path from the Eifel joins the Mosel cycle path from the right. Continue towards Trier city center and Pfalzel. Pass under the B 53 and shortly after the B 52 and cycle about a kilometer through the industrial area of Trier harbor. You then reach Pfalzel, having passed a railway line and a small woodland.
You cycle through the historic town center of Pfalzel. The next kilometers will always be parallel to the Mosel on the cycle path of the same name until you reach Trier.
Tip: Plan a detour to Klausen (about 3 kilometers). Klausen is the destination of more than 100,000 pilgrims annually because of its Marian pilgrimage church.
