Old Layer Slate Pit

Mining has shaped the village of Altlay and its residents.

The mining industry has shaped the village of Altlay and its inhabitants, giving the village its name Altlay. A "Lay" is a type of roofing slate in the local dialect. Those who explore the narrow creek valleys around Altlay will not miss the prominent remnants of mining here and there. One encounters the remains of what was once a rather extensive, predominantly small-scale roofing slate extraction operation at every turn. Even today, slate is still being mined in Altlay.
