Drama, historical film, DE 2025, age rating 16

Directed by: Mascha Schilinski
Starring: Luise Heyer, Lena Urzendowsky, Claudia Geisler

A secluded four-sided farm in Altmark. The walls have breathed the lives of the people who have lived here for over a century, their tastes, their being in time. LOOKING INTO THE SUN tells the story of four women from different eras – Alma (1910s), Erika (1940s), Angelika (1980s), and Nelly  (2020s) – whose lives are eerily intertwined. Each of them experiences her childhood or youth on this farm, but while they traverse their own present, traces of the past reveal themselves to them – unspoken fears, repressed traumas, buried secrets. Alma discovers that she was named after her deceased sister and believes she must follow the same fate. Erika becomes lost in a dangerous fascination with her disfigured uncle. Angelika balances between a longing for death and a thirst for life, trapped in a fragile family system. Finally, Nelly, who grows up in apparent security, is haunted by intense dreams and the unconscious burden of the past. When a tragic event on the farm repeats itself, the boundaries between past and present begin to wobble.
Mascha Schilinski has created a grand, epochal film with LOOKING INTO THE SUN, a grand tour into the finest branches of the emotional worlds of these four women. LOOKING INTO THE SUN also aims at our present and our acutely changing experience of history and epochal change. A film that digs deep into our perception and stages the sensation where feeling is most fleeting: in the quickly fading sense of time.
