Tragicomedy
In North Yorkshire, a local brass band from the mine, led by Danny (Pete Postlethwaite), is preparing for the national championships – and this at a time when the miners of the mine face the threat of dismissal. When Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald), the daughter of a former band leader, appears, her return to the band lifts the spirits; furthermore, a tender romance develops with one of the younger band members (Ewan McGregor). In this key scene, the band plays under Gloria's leadership on flugelhorn Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez". By combining the yearning sound of brass band music with dry humor, political themes, and human fates, "Brassed Off" reminds us that in the end, it is all about the music.
