Altlay

Blick auf AltlayMining has left its mark on the village of Altlay and its inhabitants and has given it its name. A “lay” is the local word for a roof slate.

Whoever enters the narrow river valleys around Altlay will hardly miss the evidence of former slate mining. Wherever one goes there are signs of extensive slate extraction which was mostly small scale mining.

Forst

ForstIn the fresh and natural air of the Hunsrück hikers and cyclists can forget their daily stress. Forst is the smallest of the four communities belonging to “Strimmiger Berg”.

In the middle ages it belonged to the Archdiocese and Electorate of Trier. The chapel built in 1747 is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Barbara. It is presumed that the altar decorated with the baroque figurines of Saint Apollinaris, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Barbara originate from the Engelport monastery.
